Jordan, Egypt to Send Ambassadors to Israel

Jordan and Egypt plan to send ambassadors back to Israel, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu Al-Gheit said on Tuesday.

Jordan and Egypt both recalled their ambassadors from Israel shortly after violence erupted between Israelis and Palestinians in September 2000, in protest of what they saw as Israel’s aggressive attitude towards Palestinians.

Egypt and Israel forged a peace agreement in 1979. Jordan signed a peace agreement with Israel just over a decade ago.

The ambassadors may return within days, Abu Al-Gheit said. The announcement came during the Sharm A-Sheikh summit where leaders from Egypt, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Authority gathered in an attempt to get the peace process back on track.

Jordan’s government spokeswoman Asma Khader told AP that the Jordanian ambassador will indeed be returning to his post but did not say when this would occur.
