Kenya Charges Four for Mombasa Bombings

Nairobi magistrates have charged four people in connection with last year’s bombing of an Israeli-owned hotel in the coastal city Mombasa.

According to the country’s Justice Minister Kiraitu Murungi, the four appeared in court on Tuesday.

More people are expected to be charged in the next few days, according to a report in Tuesday’s edition of the Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation.

As many as 15 people were killed in the bombing of the Paradise Hotel, when three terrorists drove an explosive-laden vehicle into the courtyard. A group of Israeli tourists had just arrived from the airport and were bring entertained by a dance troupe at the time.

Minutes later, terrorists attempted to blow up an Israeli aircraft as it took off from Mombasa, bound for Tel Aviv.

News of the court appearances came after U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Johnnie Carson accused the Kenyan authorities of not making a single arrest or prosecution of terrorists in two-and-a-half years.

Kenya is believed to be a major African base for Al-Qa’ida operatives.
