Mahmoud ‘Abbas was sworn in as the Palestinian Authority’s first prime minister at a ceremony that was held in Yassir Arafat’s Ramallah office on Wednesday. The choice of venue is seen as a slap at both the U.S. and Israel, who have been campaigning to render Arafat “irrelevant” while ‘Abbas has responded with gestures of solidarity.
