Malaysia Arrests 12 Terror Suspects

The Malaysian authorities have arrested 12 members of a radical Islamic group who are suspected of planning terror attacks in neighboring countries.

Most of the detainees are said to be Indonesians belonging to a radical group Dar Al-Islam, reportedly a new Indonesian group.  They were captured after six months of surveillance on Borneo Island, which is partly controlled by Indonesia.

Investigations have revealed that at least one of the detainees was trained by Al-Qa’ida in Afghanistan, the Malaysian Star reported.  The report said he was taught to handle arms and make bombs and he trained other member of Dar Al-Islam in Indonesia and Afghanistan.

The Star said the arrest is the biggest crackdown on terrorism in Malaysia in five years.

The largest terror attack in this region occurred in 2002 on the Indonesian island Bali, in October 2002.  The bombing killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists. It was allegedly carried out by Al-Jama’a Al-Islamiyya, an Islamic terror organization which is said to be linked to Al-Qa’ida.
