Muslims at Earth Summit: “Islam rejects racial discrimination”

The Muslim World League (MWL), a bloc of more than 50 nations, issued a statement at the Earth Summit in Johannesburg today rejecting racism and war.

The bloc presented an Islamic working paper showing the vision of Islam towards wars in the world, according to the official Saudi news agency. The MWL called on all participants at the summit to come forward and reach an agreement to condemn wars in the world.

The League also urged the preventing of wars as “Islam does not encourage wars. Moreover, Islam rejects racial discrimination,” read the statement.

It seems a little odd that this news report came out of Saudi Arabia. The kingdom bans all Jews from passing through its borders, and does not allow Christians into its holy cities, Mecca and Medina.

Prior to 1993 and the creation of the Palestinian Authority, Ramallah and Bethlehem were 70-80 percent Christian. Now only 10% of their populations are Christian.

In Libya there are some seven Jews remaining from a pre-1967 community of tens of thousands. The Afghani community has been depleted, with just two Jews left.

In the United States dozens of imams, the nation over, preach hatred and war. The Taliban and Osama bin-Laden base their beliefs firmly in their religion.

While Islam may indeed be a religion of peace and may well shun racism, thousands of its modern-day proponents and practitioners fall way short of those very noble goals.
