new Jordanian gov’t to fight terror

The new Jordanian government will be sworn in on Sunday, as Prime Minister Ma’rouf Al-Bakhit promises that fighting terror will top his agenda.

The new government will consist of many new faces, following what was seen by the Jordanian public as the previous government’s failure to prevent terror attacks in the country.

Jordan’s newly appointed prime minister denied that the triple hotel bombing attacks in Amman earlier this month were the reason for the major reshuffling of the kingdom’s government, reported the Arab news portal Al-Bawaba. However, according to remarks published Saturday by the Jordanian newspaper A-Dustour, Al-Bakhit vowed that fighting terrorism and implementing reforms would top his agenda. We “must replace the culture of extremism with that of tolerance,” added Al-Bakhit. Al-Bakhit also promised his government will fight corruption, poverty, and unemployment.

Jordan is one of several Arab countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq among others, which has fallen victim to extreme Islamist terrorism orchestrated by Al-Qa’ida and its affiliates. Extreme Islamist terror movements demand that Arab leaders not cooperate with Western countries in what they see as occupation, new colonialism, and arrogance.
