Nuclear Know-how Does Not Mean Saudi Arabia and the UAE Will Be Developing Weapons (AUDIO INTERVIEW)

A Democrat-led congressional panel has launched an inquiry into an alleged White House plan to share nuclear technology with Saudi Arabia and build reactors throughout the kingdom. Lawmakers are investigating whether the initiative would violate US laws barring the transfer of sensitive technologies that can be used to develop nuclear weapons.

While Riyadh maintains it wants to diversify its oil-dependent energy sector, the House of Saud has made clear that it will take steps to match the atomic capabilities of arch-foe Iran, something analysts warn could spark a regional arms race. In addition, The United Arab Emirates, a key Saudi ally against Iran, is ready to license the operation of a large nuclear power-generating facility.

Vitaly Fedchenko, a senior researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, believes it would be “far fetched” to suppose that this technology in and of itself will lead Saudi Arabia or the UAE to develop nuclear weapons.
