Nun Stabbed in Egypt Church

A Muslim student stabbed a nun in a Christian Coptic Church on Wednesday, protesting against a theatrical play Muslim groups consider offensive to Islam.

According to UPI, the student entered St. George’s Coptic Church in Alexandria while shouting slogans against Christians. He then stabbed the nun and a person who tried to help her. They were both rushed to hospital for treatment.

Egyptian authorities arrested the attacker.

The stabbing followed demonstrations in Alexandria against the church, concerning a theatrical play staged at the church, which Muslims construed as offensive to Islam.

According to the report, officials in the church said the play was staged two years ago and denied that it was offensive to Islam. They said it dealt with different types of religious radicalism.

Sources from the Egyptian security system accused religious elements of using the matter for electoral gain.

Coptic Christians make up less than six percent of Egypt’s 77 million inhabitants. The rest are mostly Sunni Muslims.
