P.A. Journalist Association Protests Police Attacks on Journalists

The Palestinian Journalist Syndicate held a sit-in on Wednesday to protest the police attack in Ramallah on journalists Tuesday, who were covering a rally against the Annapolis conference.

Describing the attack as “brutal,” the syndicate said that dozens of journalists were either beaten or arrested by the police during the attack to disperse the protesters.

A similar attack in Hebron by the police resulted in the killing of a protester and the wounding of several others, medical sources reported.

Throughout the West Bank and Gaza, tens of thousands of people took the streets yesterday in anti-Annapolis rallies organized by the Muslim Fundamentalist Liberation Party, aka Al Tahrier. The protesters chanted slogans calling Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud ‘Abbas a traitor.

A P.A. police spokesman said the attack occurred after the organizers refused to obey a police ban on anti-Annapolis rallies in the West Bank.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Riad Al-Malki, who promised an investigation into the attack on journalists, said the Fatah-led government has banned all West Bank activities related to the conference, including press conferences, in an effort to prevent any outbreak of violence.

In other developments the police Wednesday also attacked the funeral procession of the protester who was shot and killed by police in Hebron.
