Pakistani Tae Kwon Do team might demand $10 million from Latvia

On the eve of Christmas, ten Pakistanis saw the end of one experience they won’t wish to remember. After a month and a half in a Latvian detention camp they were released and deported to Pakistan, and now they intend to sue the Latvian government for $10 million.

The story began in mid-November, when a group of Tae Kwon Do athletes were arrested on suspicion of planning a terror attack against an Israeli basketball team, which happened to be visiting Latvia at the same time.

The Latvian police found no proof against the group, but nevertheless they were kept in a detention camp long after the Israeli team returned to Israel. The main reason for the police’s suspicion was that only one of the 10 actually participated in the tournament. The group explained this by saying they got their visas late – only a day before the tournament was over – and that is why most of them couldn’t participate. [To read the full story click here. [1]]

Now the group is thinking of suing the Latvian government for $10 million, unless it makes “an official apology to the Pakistani government and its people,” Secretary General of the Korean Tae Kwon Do Association of Pakistan Muhammad Shafique Marllowe told The Media Line. The team demands not only an apology, but also a Latvian public announcement admitting the group was not involved in any way with terrorism.

The Media Line will continue following the story as it develops.
