Palestinian Parliament Demands Reforms

The Palestinian parliamentary committee for reforms presented its conclusions to the parliament and to the government on Wednesday, demanding the implementation of a series of reforms, reports the Palestinian daily Al-Quds.

The committee said that it is necessary for Prime Minister Ahmad Qurei’ to establish a new government, “capable of confronting the challenges facing the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority (P.A.).”

One of the future government’s main goals will be maintaining internal security. This task was given further urgency with the assassination attempt on the acting head of Palestinian intelligence, Tariq Abu Rajab, made on the same day the parliamentary meeting took place. Abu Rajab was attacked and severely injured by an as-yet unidentified Palestinian group.

The committee also recommended legislation defining the role of each of the three new security organizations.

Despite his disagreements with the reforms committee, it was reported that P.A. Chairman Yassir Arafat has issued orders for the implementation of the committee’s recommendations.
