Palestinian Police Head Escapes Assassination

The chief of police in Gaza, General Ghazi Jabali, survived an attempt on his life on Thursday morning. A large bomb exploded outside Jabali’s house in Gaza at 2:30 a.m., shortly after he left his home. No one was injured in the attack, however the blast destroyed the ground floor of the four-storey building.

The Palestinian police force immediately began an investigation of the explosion. Reports suggest the bomb was planted by Palestinians, due to internal rifts in the Palestinian Authority ahead of the anticipated withdrawal of Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Israel has not been named as a suspect.

Jabali escaped another attempt on his life in February, when a gunfight erupted at police headquarters in Gaza. Two policemen were killed in that attack and 15 wounded, according to the Arabic news portal Al-Bawaba.

AP reported that a similar bomb was used in the attack on the American convoy in October 2003, in which three American guards were killed.
