Palestinians Mark International Solidarity Day

Saturday was celebrated as the international solidarity day with the Palestinians.

Palestinian institutions and factions called on the international community to support their cause and help the Palestinian people obtain their lawful rights. They urged the world to demand Israel comply with international resolutions aimed at genuine regional peace.

November 29, 1947 is celebrated by Israelis as the day on which the United Nations voted in favor of the Partition Plan.

The plan would have divided the area west of the Jordan River into three sections at the end of the British mandate in 1948: a Jewish state, an Arab state and an internationally-governed zone in Jerusalem.

Two-thirds of the assembly voted in favor of the plan, but the recognition of a Jewish state caused tumult in the Arab world.

Fatah, the largest faction in the Palestinian Authority, issued a proclamation on the November 29 anniversary calling on the international community to assist the Palestinians. “It’s time for the world to make a move and assume responsibility to end the recent military-settlement building, and occupation,” the document stated.

The Palestinian daily Al-Quds reported that mass protests and rallies took place in Palestinian-governed areas.

Two such demonstrations took place in Ramallah and in the Balata refugee camp, where participants called for recognition of their rights and protested against the ‘Geneva Initiative’ for compromising on the right of return.
