Qatar to join U.N. Security Council

Qatar will replace Pakistan at the U.N. Security Council in January 2006. This was decided on Monday at a meeting of the U.N. Asian block, after Cambodia withdrew its request to be nominated to the non-permanent membership seat in the council.

Since the establishment of the Security Council, it has included five permanent members and ten non-permanent members. Seeking the approval of the Asian block to become its representative in the council, Qatar also held talks with Israel, with which it does not have diplomatic ties.

The talks were held during a meeting several days ago between Qatar’s ambassador to the United Nations, Na’sir ‘Abd Al-‘Aziz A-Na’ser and Israel’s U.N. ambassador, Dan Gillerman.

As ties between Israel and Qatar are warming, Israel’s support for Qatar in the U.N. might help it gain support for its own causes in the organization.
