Egyptian unmanned aerial vehicles have in recent weeks been detected flying over the nuclear research facility at Nahal Soreq and the missile test site south of Tel Aviv, according to a report in the London Sunday Times.
An Israeli official insinuated that Israel may intercept the Egyptian drones and bring them down, and that this will not take long.
The flights contravene the 1979 peace agreement between the two countries, fueling distrust over a military build-up.
An Israeli source said Israel is very concerned about the flights, and the fact that Egypt has the audacity to send them to Israel.
A governmental source told the Israeli daily Ma’ariv that these flights are not considered unusual activity, and that they have not caused a rift between Israel and Egypt.
Security sources downplayed the significance of the drones, claiming that in any case the areas photographed are well known and can be observed even with commercial satellites.
Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office refused to comment on the issue.
