Report: Iranian Drone Shot Down In Yemen

Yemen’s security forces on Wednesday shot down an Iranian unmanned drone in the southern region of the country, the Yemeni daily Akhbar Al-Yawm reported, according to Reuters.

Government officials confirmed a drone was downed, but did not give any more details, nor did they confirm the drone was Iranian. Akhbar Al-Yawm reported however, that security sources said the plane came from Iran.

The Yemeni Defense Ministry announced the incident happened in the district of Hadramaut. The Air Defense forces spotted the reconnaissance plane after it had penetrated Yemen’s aerial space, said the London-based daily A-Sharq Al-Awsat.

Yemen has accused Iran in recent weeks of aiding the rebels in the northern region of ‘S’ada. The rebellion, led by the Shi’ite leader Badr A-Din al-Houthi, began two months ago and reports indicate dozens – if not hundreds – of rebels and soldiers have already been killed.

Yemen’s Foreign Minister Dr. Abu Bakr Al-Qirbi has expressed his concerns regarding the Sunni-Shi’ite conflicts in the Middle East and in Yemen in particular. In a recent interview with The Media Line, Al-Qirbi said he was concerned that the Sunni-Shi’ite conflict was becoming a major issue and described it as "one the most dangerous conflicts that can arise in any country or region."

Iran is known to support Shi’ite movements around the Middle East, in countries such as Iraq, Lebanon and the Persian Gulf countries.
