Security Council to Discuss Iran’s Atomic Ambitions

Five United Nations Security Council members are meeting in Washington on Monday to discuss the next step with regard to Iran’s nuclear program.

During the meeting with representatives of the United States, United Kingdom, France, China and Russia, the U.S. is expected to push for further sanctions on Iran.

The meeting comes on the heels of a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued on Friday.

The report said Iran was being more transparent and commended the fact that it had given access to sites that were previously off limits. However, the report also concluded that Tehran had not provided assurances that it was not manufacturing a nuclear bomb and that it was continuing uranium enrichment in defiance of U.N. demands.

Iran has been under international pressure since 2002 to abandon its nuclear program for fear the program is being used to covertly make nuclear weapons.

However, Tehran insists the program is for peaceful purposes of generating electricity.

Two sets of sanctions are already in place against Iran and a resolution has been presented for a third set of sanctions, which could expand the list of targeted Iranian companies and impose travel bans on Iranian officials.

Tehran says there is no legal basis for new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear activities.
