U.N. Concerned about Hizbullah Rearming

The United Nations is expressing concern over reports that Hizbullah has rebuilt and increased its military capability to a level higher than before the 34-day war with Israel last summer.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said these reports were “deeply disconcerting.”

It was vital the armed Shi’ite organization transformed into a solely political organization, Ban said on Wednesday, in a report to the U.N. Security Council.

He said all parties should commit to the disarming of “militias,” including Hizbullah.

Ban expected cooperation from other countries in the region, and especially from Syria and Iran, which both have close connections with Hizbullah.

U.N. Resolution 1701, which ended the conflict between Israel and Hizbullah last year, called for disarming all armed groups in Lebanon, including Hizbullah.

“There will be no weapons or authority in Lebanon, other than that of the Lebanese state,” the resolution says.
