U.N. Delegation to Sudan completes report

Ninety days have passed since the U.N. gave the Sudanese government three months to calm the situation in Darfur. The U.N. has since sent a delegation headed by Jan Pronk, to inquire as to the progress of the government. Pronk is expected to meet on Monday in Khartoum with two U.N. inspection teams that have returned from different parts of Darfur.

At a press conference held on Sunday, Pronk said that during the expected meeting, all the U.N.inspectors in Sudan will analyze their visits. After the meeting, Pronk will hand over his full report to the U.N.

Some of the main tasks the Sudanese government was supposed to implement were the disarming of the Janjaweed militia, and the settling of the humanitarian crisis with the aid of the U.N. and other international organizations.

The government is holding negotiations with both the Janjaweed and the rebel groups from the Darfur region. The negotiations are still underway, according to the head of the Sudanese government delegation, Dr. Majzoub Al-Khalifa, but no definite agreement has yet been signed.

According to Pronk, the Sudanese government has accomplished some significant results in both the security and humanitarian aspects. Still, the situation in Sudan is far from good, and the U.N. is expected to get much more involved in the crisis in the near future.
