U.N. Pushes for Chad-Sudan Cooperation

A top United Nations official in Chad is warning of a regional humanitarian disaster unless Sudan and Chad stop the escalating violence in Darfur and its surroundings.

U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator for Chad Kingsley Amaning said if armed groups continue to operate in the area, this will increasingly weaken government institutions and embitter the lives of civilians.

The comments came a day after Sudanese and Chadian officials vowed to restore diplomatic ties “immediately” following three days of peace talks in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

In a joint statement issued at the end of the talks, both sides said they would not interfere in each other’s affairs and would not host rebels who are fighting against the other nation.

More than 240,000 Sudanese have fled violence in the war-torn Darfur region in western Sudan, entering Chad, according to the U.N.

The situation has fueled tension between the two countries.

Foreign ministers from both nations announced a joint military-security commission and a joint force to secure the border.
