U.S. Begins Major Exercise in Persian Gulf

The United States Navy this week began major war games in the Persian Gulf, involving two nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, the Emirati daily Gulf News reported.

"This marks the first time the [carriers] John C. Stennis and Dwight D. Eisenhower strike groups have operated together in a point exercise while deployed to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet," spokesman of the Bahrain-based U.S. Naval Central Command Lieut.-Cmr. Charlie Brown told the Gulf News on Tuesday.

Brown added that the exercise would demonstrate the ability of the two carriers to operate cooperatively, as part of the U.S.’s commitment to maintaining maritime security and stability in the region.

The war games will include air warfare exercises, as well as anti-submarine, anti-surface and mine warfare.

The exercises are conducted amid growing tension following the recent capture of 15 British sailors and marines by Iran’s navy. They also follow several Iranian war games that were conducted in recent months.

Top Iranian military officials declared recently their country was ready to face any attack on its territories.
