U.S. Firm Pulls Out of Iraq

The first major United States firm working on Iraqi reconstruction has decided to pull out of the war-torn country.

A spokesman for Contrack International described the situation in Iraq as too dangerous.

The company was working on a $325 million contract to rebuild roads, bridges and railroads.

The decision was announced a day after the most serious attack on U.S. troops since fighting began in Iraq.

A suicide bomber killed 22 people, including 19 soldiers in Mou’sul on Tuesday.

Since the official end of the Iraqi War more than a year ago Arab fighters have been targeting staff from many foreign companies, with several having been kidnapped and some beheaded.

The ongoing fighting means the reconstruction of the country has been far slower than anticipated by the Bush Administration.

So far, just over 10 percent of money allocated for work in Iraq has actually been spent.
