UAE Legislates Anti-Terror Law

The president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has issued the state’s first law against terrorism, threatening anyone who heads a terror organization with the death penalty, local newspapers reported on Thursday.

The law defined terrorism as “anything intended to terrify people, disturb public order and tranquility, put at risk community safety, injure people or expose them to danger,” according to the Gulf Daily News. The law applies to government also, according to the law decreed by UAE leader Sheikh Zayyid Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Life sentences will be doled out to people who assist terror groups, including financial support and the supply of weapons, according to reports.

The announcement comes after the Zayed Center for Coordination and Follow-up, funded by Al Nahyan, withdrew a grant to Harvard’s Divinity School, following claims that the center organized anti-Semitic programming.

An editorial in Gulf Daily News praised the law, saying that it corroborates the true nature of peaceful nature of Islam. “The godfathers of terrorism are told in no uncertain terms that they cannot hide behind Islam,” the editorial stated.
