Residents of Moroni, capital of the Comoros Islands, have fled their homes on seeing lava spewing from Mount Karthala, Reuters reports.
It is not yet known to which direction the lava will flow, and whether or not poisonous gas will be released from the volcano.
African Union troops present on the islands were expected to fly over the volcano on Monday, to try to determine in which direction the lava is flowing.
The Arab league’s smallest member state is located east of Mozambique, near the island of Madagascar. Its 690,000 citizens went to the ballots on May 14 to vote for their new president. The results of the elections are still not clear, as the election-committee continues the count.
