Yemen Seeks to Join GCC, WTO

Yemen is planning to restructure its economy in order to become a full member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) Yemen’s minister of industry and trade said.

Yahya Al-Mutawakil said the ministry was gearing up to provide more support for the industrial sector, according to the Yemen Observer.

‘Sana hopes to be fully integrated into the WTO by 2008.

The minister called the WTO an “inevitable evil” because it meant the stronger countries controlled the weaker countries. Countries could not afford not to join the organization, he said.

Yemen has membership in GCC councils for education, health, social affairs and sports, according to Arabian Business.

Full integration in the GCC is planed for 2015.

The GCC is a trade bloc that includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
