Egyptians Overwhelmingly Back Sisi Government’s Constitutional Amendments (AUDIO INTERVIEW)

Egypt’s top election official announced that a referendum to amend the country’s constitution passed by a wide margin.

The three-day vote called for changes to presidential terms of office that would leave Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in power until 2030, and measures that would increase the military’s power in the political realm.

The chair of Egypt’s National Election Authority told reporters that nearly 89 percent of those who took part in the referendum voted in favor of the changes.

The Media Line discussed the possible ramifications with Dr. Ofir Winter, a research fellow at the Tel Aviv-based Institute for National Security Studies.
