Iran Threatens to Attack US Troops in Region over IRGC Designation (AUDIO INTERVIEW)
Iranian Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Ali Jafari, head of the country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), threatened Mideast-based US troops on Sunday if the Trump Administration goes ahead and designates the IRGC a terrorist organization. “With this stupidity, the American army and security forces will no longer have today’s calm in the West Asia region,” he said, according to the semi-official Fars news agency. The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that the US was expected to designate the IRGC – Iran’s most powerful security apparatus – a foreign terrorist organization, the first time Washington formally labels an element of another country’s military in such a way. Also on Sunday, 255 out of 290 Iranian parliamentarians issued a statement stressing that they would respond reciprocally to any measure against the ideologically-driven IRGC, which has amassed great economic and political power in Iranian society and has already been labeled a terrorist organization by Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
The Media Line discussed the development and more with Iran expert Dr. Yossi Mansharof.
