Sudan’s Long-ruling President is Out. But What’s Next for the African Nation? (AUDIO INTERVIEW)

Reports from Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, say President Omar al-Bashir, in power since a 1989 coup, has been ousted and placed under house arrest by the country’s military. The move follows weeks of protests over what began as discontent with the rising price of bread, and mushrooming into demands that Bashir leave and a new mode of governance be implemented.

It’s as yet unclear whether the military will accede to these demands or the country merely comes under the hand of a new autocrat, whether in uniform or not.

To answer some of these questions, The Media Line turned to Dr. Annette Weber, a Sudan expert at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin.
