Iran said on Monday it had passed the 3.67% uranium enrichment cap set by the multilateral 2015 nuclear deal, and could enrich the material to even higher levels, a quasi-official Iranian broadcaster reported, quoting Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the country’s Atomic Energy Organization. In a news conference yesterday, Kamalvandi said: “We are fully prepared to enrich uranium at any level and with any amount.” The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed last week that the Islamic Republic had exceeded the limit of the size of its stockpile of enriched uranium set forth by the pact. Iran also gave its European partners to the deal a 60-day deadline to salvage it, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi told reporters Monday, adding that Tehran was still open to negotiation. Iran said it would take further steps to reduce its compliance with the agreement after the deadline. Tehran is mounting pressure on European signatories to the 2015 deal to find a way around sanctions that were reimposed on the Islamic Republic by Washington last year, following the latter’s unilateral withdrawal from the agreement.
