Tunisia’s President Sacks Defense, Foreign Ministers

Tunisian President Kais Saied on Tuesday ordered the replacement of Defense Minister Abdelkarim Zbidi and Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui in his first major move since being elected on October 13. He was inaugurated last week. Under the country’s constitution, the president has direct control over defense and foreign policy, while the prime minister and the government oversee domestic matters. Saied’s moderate Islamist Ennahda party won a plurality of seats in the parliamentary elections held on October 6 but nowhere near enough to easily ensure the emergence of a governing coalition. Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, who officially fired Zbidi and Jhinaoui, will remain in office until there is a new government.
