82-Year Old Mubarak to Seek Another Term

Egypt’s octogenarian president has thrown his hat into the ring. Hosni Mubarak, who is 82, will seek another term as president, an office he’s held for 30-years. There had been speculation that Mubarak was preparing his son, Gamal, to take over the reins of power, but the announcement on Thursday by an official of Mubarak’s National Democratic Party puts that theory to rest for the moment. Presidential elections are scheduled for next October; and national parliamentary elections for this coming November 28th. The ongoing concerns about Mubarak’s health and his age are keeping alive speculation that Mubarak Jr., will still surface as the NDP candidate before the scheduled election date. It is virtually impossible to defeat the NDP candidate even though there has been a great deal of criticism and political activism in the run-up to the parliamentary balloting. Former U.N. atomic watchdog chief Mohammad Al-Baradei is a popular figure posturing for a run at the presidency, but experts say the quest is impossible unless constitutional changes are allowed by Mubarak.
