Amid extreme security alerts that prompted the United States government to close its embassies and consulates throughout the Middle East, an American-operated drone struck at suspected Al-Qa’ida operatives in Yemen on Tuesday morning, killing at least 4. One of those killed was on a list of 25 terrorists the Yemeni government said were involved in the terror plot that was supposed to coincide with the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The action took place in the eastern Marib province. The New York Times reported that the alert was triggered by US intelligence intercepts of “chatter,” and specifically a conversation in which AL-Qa’ida chief Ayman Al-Zawahiri, was heard to instruct Nasser Al-Wuhayshi, head of Al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), to carry out a massive attack. Drone attacks have killed 17 terrorists during the past week.
