Armed Man Charged After Attempt To Target Trump at Golf Course

A man suspected of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump at his Florida golf course was charged with two gun-related crimes on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday when authorities spotted the suspect hiding in bushes with a rifle while the former US president and current Republican presidential candidate played nearby. The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Routh, was arrested later that day after fleeing in a sports utility vehicle.

Trump, who was not in the suspect’s line of sight and did not face any shots, praised the US Secret Service agents who swiftly intervened when they saw a rifle barrel emerging from the bushes. “All of a sudden, we heard shots being fired in the air. I guess probably four or five,” Trump said during an event on X Spaces. He emphasized the need for more security personnel on his detail following the incident.

The suspect was found with a loaded assault-style rifle, a digital camera, and food. Routh, a convicted felon, was charged with possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. His previous convictions include possession of an unregistered weapon of mass destruction in 2002.
