Despite the distraction of a civil war that has seen more than 140,000 Syrians killed and millions displaced from their homes, the government has announced the creation of “The Syrian Space Agency,” established “with the goal of using space technology for
exploration and observing the earth.” The issue of funding the new agency, which was not addressed in the SANA announcement, is a key question given the recent announcement by the Syrian prime minister that the civil war has so far cost Syria $31 billion in damage alone: an amount equal to its GDP.
