Dutch Recall Ambassador from Tehran in Protest of Hanging of Dual Citizen

Diplomatic tension between The Hague and Tehran continues to rise in the aftermath of the hanging of a dual Dutch-Iranian woman who was originally arrested for her participation in ant-government rallies. Once incarcerated, drug smuggling charges against Sahra Bahrami were added and became the basis upon which she was hanged on January 29 without prior notice to her family or to the Dutch government. The latest point of contention was that Iranian officials buried her body a considerable distance from Tehran, also failing to give her family notice and the opportunity to be present. The Dutch government has now recalled its ambassador for consultations – a traditional form of protest between governments. The ambassador is expected to return to Tehran.
