The European Court of Auditors scrutinized how $1.3 billion in European Union financial support to the Palestinian Authority has been used. The EU pays about one-fifth of the salaries of the 170,000 civil servants employed by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. These civil servants continue to get paid in Gaza, even after the Islamist Hamas movement took over Gaza in 2007. The European Court of Auditors foundt hat spot checks of 10 civil servants in Gaza found four weren’t working. At one place of out 125 employees, 90 weren’t working. The auditors recommended that the EU stop paying these salaries in Gaza, and shift the money to the West Bank.
