The European Union said it is gravely concerned about Turkey’s crackdown on opponents since a failed coup in July. A new EU report about the country’s prospects of joining the bloc of 19 countries said that Turkey has retreated on the independence of the judiciary, freedom of expression and other fundamental democratic standards since an attempted coup in July against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In the wake of the coup, Erdogan fired or dismissed more than 110,000 civil servants including professors and journalists. A Turkish presidential spokesman said the EU would “bear the consequences” if it decided to stop negotiations on Turkey’s joining the EU.
