Former Israeli President’s Plea Bargain Survives Court Challenge

The plea bargain former Israeli President Moshe Katzav entered into in order to end the sex abuse case against him will be allowed to stand. The High Court of Justice has dismissed several petitions from individuals and groups unhappy with the arrangement that some claimed curtailed justice and argued that the leniency shown by the prosecutors to the former president undermined the idea of equality before the law. The five justices hearing the case returned a split decision of three to two. In exchange for dropping rape charges, Katzav pleaded guilty to sexual harassment, forcible indecent assault and harassing a witness.
