Gaza Water Crisis Might be Alleviated if Desalination Plant Goes On-line on Schedule

A new desalination plant in the Gaza Strip is due to begin testing this summer and producing 6,000 cubic meters of water per day this fall. If it all happens according to plan, a humanitarian crisis-in-the-making could be averted according to the project’s funders: the European Union and the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). According to those officials, “95% of the water resources in Gaza are considered unfit for human consumption.” The Gaza Strip has one aquifer, but a 2012 report by the United Nations warned that because of over-extraction of water, it will be rendered unusable by this year and irreparable by 2020. With no groundwater remaining, desalinating sea water is the only feasible solution for providing drinking water to the 1.9 million residents of the Gaza Strip.
