Haredi Population Boom Pressures Israel for Crucial Education Changes

In a recent report by the Shoresh Institute for Socioeconomic Research, led by Professor Dan Ben-David, a significant demographic and educational challenge facing Israel is highlighted due to the rapid growth of the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) population. The study titled “Jerusalem and the Increasingly Haredi Towns: A Parable for Israel” reveals that the Haredi community’s expansion is reshaping population dynamics and potentially hindering the country’s developmental trajectory.

Professor Ben-David, interviewed by Nathan Klabin for The Media Line, expressed urgent concern over the sustainability of this growth pattern. He pointed out that while the Haredi population currently represents a small portion of Israel’s older population, it accounts for a quarter of today’s infants. This shift is poised to place immense pressure on Israel’s social services and infrastructure soon.
