Iran and US Set for New Round of Nuclear Talks in Rome

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on Wednesday that the fourth round of indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States would take place in Rome this Saturday. The talks, facilitated by Oman, are part of ongoing efforts to address Tehran’s nuclear program and US sanctions. Araghchi’s remarks were made in Tehran during a cabinet meeting, as reported by Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency.

According to Araghchi, Oman selected Rome for logistical and technical reasons. “The location is not important to us,” he said. “What matters are the contents of the negotiations and the mediator.”

Despite the resumption of dialogue, tensions remain. Araghchi criticized Washington’s recent sanctions, calling them a “negative message” during sensitive diplomatic efforts. He clarified that the International Atomic Energy Agency is not currently involved in the negotiations but would likely have a role if an agreement is reached.

Iran’s position, Araghchi stated, is to avoid “attritional negotiations” and not waste time, although no deadline has been set for concluding the talks.

The first and third rounds were held in Muscat on April 12 and 26, while the second took place in Rome on April 19. US participation is being led by Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff.

The negotiations come against the backdrop of renewed international focus on Iran’s nuclear activities, with concerns over uranium enrichment levels and regional tensions influencing diplomatic efforts. Both sides have expressed interest in reaching a resolution but remain divided on key issues, including sanctions relief.
