Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif issued a “reminder” to European nations that the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal permit Tehran to enrich uranium to 3.67 percent, a level below the weaponized 90% threshold. “Might be useful for European partners to actually read the document they signed on to, and pledged to defend,” the Islamic Republic’s top diplomat tweeted. Zarif made the assertion after France’s ambassador to Washington suggested that, “it’s false to say that at the expiration of the JCPOA [an abbreviation of nuclear agreement’s formal name], Iran will be allowed to enriching [sic] uranium.” Paris, London and Berlin remain at odds with US President Donald Trump, who pulled out of the pact last May and re-imposed sanctions on Tehran. The Europeans, by contrast, have vowed to salvage the JCPOA by creating a so-called Special Purpose Vehicle to enable continued non-dollar trade with Iran, thereby circumventing American financial penalties. This comes as the US’ designation of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a “foreign terrorist organization” officially took effect with a notice published in the Federal Register. The unprecedented proscription of a branch of a foreign army precludes governments, corporations and individuals from providing any “material support” to the IRGC. Somewhat paradoxically, the White House is currently engaged in a battle with various congressional Iran “hawks” over the prospect of extending sanctions waivers permitting certain countries to purchase Iranian oil.
