Israeli bulldozers protected by hundreds of soldiers and police demolished three homes in Migron, a Jewish community built on land seized from Palestinians about five kilometers (three miles) north of Jerusalem. Settlers clashed with the security forces, who detained half a dozen of them. The demolition came after last month’s landmark ruling by the Supreme Court ordering the government to dismantle the 60 houses there by the end of March. Israel had promised the U.S. years ago to dismantle the settlement, but it wasn’t until the leftist Peace Now organization petitioned the court that the action was taken. A few hours after the demolition, Palestinians said Jewish settlers rampaged through the West Bank village of Kusra, smashing car windows, spraying graffiti and setting fire to one of the village mosques with blazing tires.
