While the United States was turning its back on the Kurdish fighters who allied with American forces during the fight against ISIS, Israel provided humanitarian aid and interceded on their behalf in Washington. On Wednesday, Israeli Deputy foreign minister Tzipi Hotovely told the parliament that requests from the Kurds come in a variety of areas, from humanitarian to diplomatic, were honored by the Jewish state. According to Hotovely, because Israelis “identify with the Kurds’ deep distress, we are helping them through a range of channels.” The relationship between Israel and the Kurds dates back more than 70-years. Today, the Kurds remain an important element of deterrence against Iran.
