Israel emerged as a topic of discussion during Tuesday’s U.S. Supreme Court nomination hearing for Elena Kagan. When the nominee was asked whether she would try to emulate the judicial activism of former Israeli Supreme Court Justice Aharon Barak. Kagan responded unambiguously, explaining that her admiration for Barak stems from the role he played in shaping an independent judiciary for a young nation rather than because of specific rulings. Kagan then explained that as a Jew, “Israel has meant a lot to me and my family.”
