Israeli General: Growing Chaos in Gaza Strip

Despite calls for restraint from both sides, rocket attacks and retaliatory air strikes continued over the weekend between the Hamas and Israel. Israeli aircraft fired a missile at Palestinian militants attempting to launch a rocket early on Sunday, killing at least two of them. A day earlier, a rocket fired from Gaza hit an Israeli house, causing damage but no injuries. Hamas signaled on Saturday that it would halt rocket fire if Israel also ceased its strikes while Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Sunday said attacks on southern Israel won’t be tolerated but that Israel isn’t interested in an escalation. The Gaza Strip is slipping into anarchy, according to Maj.-Gen. Tal Russo, commander of the Israeli southern district. "Hamas has lost control of other organizations within the Gaza Strip. There is anarchy among them and within Hamas itself. There’s no authority over any facet and it’s difficult for Hamas to regain control,” the army spokesman quoted him as saying. Meanwhile, Israel said it will deploy on Sunday its experimental “Iron Dome” systems, which is designed to defend against short-range rockets and artillery.
