Israel’s Higher Educational Year Set to Start… Somewhat

The academic year for Israel’s colleges and teachers’ colleges is set to start on Sunday, with universities slated to begin a week later. Overall, the situation facing higher education underscores why the state of Israel’s educational system continues to be referred to as the nation’s greatest shame. Last year, senior university professors struck for 91 days, leaving university schedules a shambles and forcing many students to drop out. This year the heads of universities and the students’ unions have announced that the school year will not commence until the Treasury releases more than 100 million shekels that have been allocated. They claim it is not a strike but that there is no money to operate the universities without the frozen funds. While colleges and teachers’ colleges are set to open, there are widespread reports of the closing of departments, overcrowded classrooms and deterioration of facilities, including teaching labs.
