Mass Demonstration in Gaza Strip

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are demonstrating en masse Monday in protest of what they call Israel‘s "siege" of the area. Estimates of the number of participants range up to as high as 40,000. Although Israeli officials say there are no specific reports that protestors will try to break through into Israeli territory, thousands of troops have been moved to the area in order to prevent any attempted mass infiltration. Palestinians plan to form a human chain that might extend as long as 30 miles, from Rafah to Beit Hanoun. Israel‘s foreign and defense ministers have warned that any deterioration in the decorum of the demonstration that leads to violence will be Hamas’ responsibility. Israeli officials would not confirm media reports that soldiers have been ordered to shoot demonstrators in the legs in the event they try to push through the border against orders to stop. During the night an Israeli missile killed two Palestinian gunmen in the area of Khan Younis. On Sunday Israeli army troops uncovered five smuggling tunnels in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.
