A Palestinian organization is soliciting popular support for a campaign it claims is being organized to protect farmers from Israelis bent on interfering with the annual olive harvest which begins in mid-October. The group claims that there were 64 attacks on Palestinian harvesters last year and this year it will plan to focus on “protecting” specific areas deemed to be “hot spots.” Israeli residents of post-1967 communities and the Israeli army are alleged to have carried out the attacks. Calling itself the “Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign,” the primary purpose of the group is to campaign against Israel’s controversial security buffer. The organization charges that construction of the barrier has usurped thousands of acres of farm land. According to a statement issued by the group, “International volunteers are encouraged to join groups of Palestinian students and harvest olives alongside farmers and their families in the threatened villages.”
