Syrian Bloodshed Continues Despite Arrival of UN Monitors

The arrival of UN observers to oversee the cease fire brokered by former Secretary General Kofi Anan has failed to stem the continuing violence that has cost more than 9,000 Syrian lives during the past year. Syrian President Al-Asad ignored his commitment to withdraw his forces from contested cities prior to the time the cease fire was to go into effect; and has continued to fire artillery rounds and use snipers in towns and cities identified as strongholds of the opposition Free Syrian Army. 67 civilians were reported killed on Tuesday and artillery fire continued into Wednesday. Gunfire was especially heavy in four neighborhoods of Homs. A spokesman for the unarmed UN group said the observers will remain in Damascus for talks and not venture out to the areas of conflict.
